About Eden's Dark Margin Bergenia

‘Eden’s Dark Margin’ is an evergreen Bergenia selected for glossy green leaves edged in deep maroon-purple, with the color becoming more noticeable in autumn and winter. The [Royal Horticultural Society’s exact cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/168503/bergenia-edens-dark-margin/details) describes magenta-purple flowers in mid-spring and an approximate mature size of 30 cm tall by 40 cm wide. ## Landscape use The compact mound works as a low ground cover, edging, or a front-of-border foliage accent. Its colored leaf margins provide interest beyond the spring flower display. ## Siting and soil Grow in sun or partial shade in soil that holds some moisture while draining freely. Bergenias tolerate several soil types, but prolonged waterlogging can damage the roots. Water during extended dry periods while the plant establishes. ## Seasonal interest The leaves remain through winter in suitable conditions, and the dark margins stand out as temperatures cool. Magenta-purple flower clusters appear in mid-spring above the foliage. ## Maintenance Remove winter-damaged leaves and faded flower stems as needed. Divide the clump if it becomes congested.
