Create design onlineAbout Winterglut Bergenia
Winterglut is a clump-forming, evergreen Bergenia with glossy dark green leaves that flush red in winter and dark pink flowers on dark red stems. The [Royal Horticultural Society’s profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/201320/bergenia-winterglow/details) lists *Bergenia cordifolia* ‘Winterglut’ among the synonyms for ‘Winterglow’; it describes plants up to 40 cm high, with a broad 0.1–0.5 m spread range and flowers in spring, often again in autumn.
## Landscape use
Use this low perennial as an edging, a ground-covering clump, or a foliage accent in a mixed border. Its persistent leaves provide structure through winter, while the flower stems bring color above the mound.
## Siting and soil
The RHS lists full shade, full sun, and partial shade. The broader [RHS Bergenia guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/bergenia) recommends humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains freely. They tolerate other soil types, though deep shade may reduce flowering and permanently wet soil can cause rot.
## Seasonal interest
Dark pink flowers open in spring and may return in autumn. Cold weather brings red tones to the otherwise glossy green leaves.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flower spikes and winter-damaged leaves to keep the clump tidy. Divide an established plant in spring or autumn if it becomes congested.
