Create design onlineAbout Birch Tree
Birches are deciduous trees and shrubs with foliage that often turns yellow in autumn; bark color and texture vary among species. The [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/2261/betula-pendula/details) and [UMass Extension](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/landscape/fact-sheets/birch-culture) describe a diverse genus that includes white, pinkish, and peeling-brown bark forms.
## Landscape use
Choose the species or cultivar for the available space and local conditions. Some birches grow as specimen trees, while others remain smaller or shrub-like; many have open crowns that allow understory planting.
## Siting and soil
[UMass Extension](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/landscape/fact-sheets/birch-culture) recommends full sun and deep, rich, moist, well-drained soil for birch culture, and cautions against hot, dry urban sites. Because Betula species differ in mature size, spread, flowers, and hardiness, use species-level information when choosing a planting location.
## Maintenance
Prune only to remove damaged or crossing growth, and wait until leaves have expanded to reduce sap bleeding. Water during extended dry periods, especially while trees establish.
