About Whitebarked Himalayan Birch

The whitebarked Himalayan birch is valued for brilliant white bark, yellow autumn leaves, and early-spring catkins. The [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/205671/betula-jacquemontii/details) lists Betula jacquemontii within the West Himalayan birch name complex, which also includes Betula utilis var. jacquemontii. ## Landscape use Use this large tree as a specimen where there is room for its crown. The RHS gives mature height up to about 18 m and spread of 4–8 m; its bright bark remains conspicuous in winter. ## Siting and soil Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Botanical references also use the name Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, so check naming conventions when sourcing plants. ## Maintenance Prune selectively to remove damaged or crossing growth. [UMass Extension](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/landscape/fact-sheets/birch-culture) advises pruning birches after leaves have expanded to reduce sap bleeding; water during establishment and prolonged dry spells.
