About Dura Heat® River Birch

Dura Heat® is the ‘BNMTF’ selection of river birch (Betula nigra), with a dense pyramidal form and greater tolerance of heat and dry periods than the species. [University of Wisconsin Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/river-birch-betula-nigra/) identifies the cultivar and describes its pinkish-orange exfoliating bark. ## Landscape use Use this deciduous tree as a specimen or shade tree where its crown has room to spread. Yellow fall foliage and peeling bark add seasonal interest, while the compact pyramidal outline distinguishes the selection from broader river birches. ## Siting and water Plant in full sun or partial shade and provide moist, preferably acidic soil. Dura Heat handles heat and dry spells better than typical river birch, but still benefits from regular water, especially while establishing. The [University of Florida IFAS river birch profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST094) gives general species care and size guidance. ## Maintenance Water deeply during establishment and prolonged dry spells. Keep the root zone open and avoid compacted, confined sites. Prune to remove damaged or crossing branches and preserve the natural branching form.
