White Birch Tree

European white birch (Betula pendula), also called silver birch, is a deciduous tree with a light crown and gracefully drooping branch tips. Its whitish bark darkens with age, while leaves turn yellow in fall. ## Landscape use Use it as a specimen or in an informal group where the roots and crown have room to develop. The [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/betula-pendula) gives typical height of 40–50 feet, sometimes larger, and USDA zone 2; it notes stressed trees can be susceptible to bronze birch borer. ## Siting and water Plant in full sun or light shade with well-drained soil and summer moisture. Although it tolerates varied soil moisture, prolonged stress can increase pest problems. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and dry summer periods. Prune selectively to remove damaged or crossing branches, keeping the natural crown. Monitor for borer symptoms, especially where trees face heat or water stress.
