About Dakota Pinnacle Birch Tree

Dakota Pinnacle® is the ‘Fargo’ selection of Asian white birch, developed by North Dakota State University for cold northern climates. Its narrow columnar to pyramidal habit and dark green foliage make it useful where a broad crown would take too much space. ## Landscape use Plant it as a vertical specimen, repeated screen, or accent along a driveway or property edge. [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/betula-platyphylla-dakota-pinnacle) reports 35–40 feet in height at 25–30 years and USDA zone 3; [J. Frank Schmidt](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/trees/dakota-pinnacle-birch/) lists 40 feet by 15 feet. ## Siting and water Grow in full sun or light shade. The breeder describes this selection as more tolerant of heat and drought than many birches, but regular moisture supports establishment and long-term vigor. ## Maintenance Water deeply during establishment and extended dry periods. Preserve the narrow natural crown with corrective pruning as needed. Oregon State University reports US Plant Patent PP10963, issued June 22, 1999.
