About Parkland Pillar® Columnar Birch

Parkland Pillar® is the trade name for Betula platyphylla ‘Jefpark’, a deciduous birch selected for a narrow columnar outline and dense branching. Its dark green leaves turn yellow in fall, and pale bark adds winter interest. ## Landscape use Use it where a slender vertical tree is needed for an accent or screen. The [First Editions/J. Frank Schmidt fact sheet](https://jfschmidt.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/parklandpillarbirch.pdf) lists 30 feet tall by 8 feet wide and USDA zone 3. The [patent text](https://patents.justia.com/patent/PP25468) reports a different mature-size observation, about 9 m high by 1.5 m wide, reflecting different plant age and conditions. ## Siting and water Plant in full sun and allow room for the narrow crown and root system. The fact sheet describes the cultivar as tolerant of heat, drought, and alkaline soil; water regularly while it establishes. ## Maintenance Water consistently while roots establish and during prolonged drought. Remove damaged or crossing branches while preserving the columnar form. US Plant Patent PP25468 identifies ‘Jefpark’ and was issued April 28, 2015, as recorded in the [patent text](https://patents.justia.com/patent/PP25468).
