Create design onlineAbout Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon
Blue Chiffon is a deciduous Rose of Sharon shrub selected for blue-lavender flowers with a lacy center of extra petals. The breeder identifies the selection as Hibiscus syriacus ‘Notwoodthree’; its patent describes the flower form and blue color that distinguish it from related selections. This upright shrub flowers on new wood through summer.
## Profile
Plan for a mature shrub about 8–12 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide. Proven Winners lists USDA hardiness zones 5a–9b, which correspond to zones 5–9. Full sun supports strong flowering, and the breeder lists average water needs.
## Planting and care
Use Blue Chiffon in a mixed or shrub border, as a specimen, in a hedge, or in a suitable container. Its blue-lavender blooms have a fluffy, lacy petaloid center and attract birds, butterflies, and hummingbirds; the breeder also lists deer resistance. Avoid soil that stays very wet or becomes very dry.
## Maintenance
Flowers form on new wood. Pruning in early spring is optional, and the breeder notes that heavy pruning is usually unnecessary.
