Sundown Orange is a vigorous bougainvillea vine whose papery bracts open deep orange and mature through coral to salmon pink. Its color shifts over time, creating a changing display against green foliage, and the thorny stems can be trained over a fence, arbor, or trellis.
## Growth and display
[Treeland Nursery's cultivar profile](https://www.tree-land.com/products/sundown-orange-bougainvillea) lists about 10–15 ft tall by 6–10 ft wide when supported; [Brighter Blooms lists](https://www.brighterblooms.com/products/sundown-orange-bougainvillea-vine) a broader 10–30 ft height and 10–20 ft spread. The range reflects different training and nursery estimates. Different trained forms and climates produce different final dimensions. Both sources place this cultivar in warm-climate landscapes, with color through the growing season.
## Siting
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Treeland lists USDA zones 9–11 and heat tolerance; established plants tolerate dry periods, but need watering during establishment and in prolonged drought. A container can be useful where winter cold threatens, provided it has drainage and receives strong light. Keep the thorny branches away from narrow walks and play areas.
## Maintenance
Provide sturdy support and guide young stems while they are flexible. Prune after flowering or as needed to control the size and keep the vine off paths; wear gloves and protective sleeves. Water deeply during establishment, then allow the soil to dry somewhat between irrigations. Avoid saturated soil, which can weaken the plant and reduce bract display. In regions colder than its outdoor range, move containers to a protected bright location before frost.
