About Blue Grama Grass

Bouteloua gracilis, known as blue grama, is a tufted, warm-season perennial grass native to North American prairies. It forms dense clumps of narrow, bluish-gray foliage reaching 12 to 15 inches tall. Distinctive comb-like seed spikes, resembling mosquito larvae, hover horizontally on stems above the leaves. Highly drought-tolerant, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is ideal for rock gardens, meadows, or as a low-maintenance lawn alternative that can be mowed.
