About Rock Palm (Brahea)

Brahea is an accepted genus of fan palms in the family Arecaceae, native from Mexico through Central America. Kew lists 11 accepted species, and their mature size, leaf color and cold tolerance vary by species; the [Kew genus profile](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/77329337-1) documents its range and accepted species, while the [RHS Brahea profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/84953/brahea-brandegeei/details) describes the genus’s large fan-shaped leaves. ## Form and landscape use Brahea palms are architectural plants with large palmate leaves, but a genus name alone does not predict the eventual crown or trunk size. Some species remain compact while others become tall landscape palms. Identify the species before allowing for mature clearance near paths, buildings or overhead lines. ## Siting and climate The genus occurs across varied habitats in Mexico and Central America. Sun exposure, drainage, water needs and cold tolerance should be matched to the selected species and local conditions. A plant identified only to genus should be confirmed with its supplier before placement where a particular size or winter limit is important. ## Water and soil Growing conditions differ among species. Establish a care routine from the identified species’ requirements, then adjust irrigation to rainfall, soil drainage and heat. Do not assume that cold tolerance or drought performance reported for one Brahea applies to every member of the genus. ## Maintenance Pruning depends on the species and its leaf stalks. Remove only fully dead fronds when needed, protect the growing point and use safe tools around large or spiny leaves.
