San José hesper palm (Brahea brandegeei) is a slow-growing, solitary fan palm from northwestern Mexico and Baja California. It develops a tall trunk and a crown of large pleated leaves; the [University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://apps.cals.arizona.edu/arboretum/taxon.aspx?id=478) describes its eventual size and cultivation, while the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/84953/brahea-brandegeei/details) gives a smaller mature-height range and a UK hardiness rating.
## Landscape use
Use this palm as a long-term specimen in an open landscape with room for a large trunk and crown. The Arizona arboretum reports heights of 50–100 feet, with possible growth to 125 feet; RHS lists 8–12 metres. The sources differ, but both describe a large palm that needs generous clearance.
## Siting and climate
Provide full sun and well-drained soil. The Arizona arboretum reports USDA zones 9b–11 and tolerance of heat and hot winds. RHS classifies the plant as frost tender and gives hardiness rating H1C under UK conditions; that rating uses a different system from USDA zones. Protect it from freezing conditions and use a sheltered position in marginal climates.
## Water and soil
Once established, the Arizona arboretum recommends deep monthly watering and reports tolerance of extreme drought. Water more often while young or during prolonged hot, dry weather, and ensure the root zone drains well.
## Maintenance
Remove only dead or badly damaged fronds, leaving healthy green leaves in place. Choose a permanent planting location; the arboretum cautions that mature palms are difficult to transplant.
