About Heartleaf Brunnera

Heartleaf brunnera (Brunnera macrophylla) is a clump-forming perennial with broad, heart-shaped leaves and airy sprays of small blue flowers in spring. It is best used in cool, shaded sites where moist, well-drained soil helps the foliage stay fresh through summer. ## Garden character The [Iowa State Extension guide](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/all-about-brunnera) describes a low, spreading mound of leaves and blue flowers with white centers in mid- to late spring. Mature plants generally reach 12–18 inches tall and 18–30 inches wide. Many garden cultivars have silver overlays or other leaf patterns, but the species itself is typically dark green. ## Siting and growing Choose partial to full shade, especially protection from hot afternoon sun. Brunnera prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter; dry conditions can brown or tatter the leaves. Use it beneath shrubs, in woodland beds, as a groundcover, or along a shaded border. The [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/brunnera-macrophylla/) gives USDA zones 3–8 and likewise recommends fertile, moist, well-drained soil and shade. ## Maintenance Water during dry spells, particularly while plants establish, and mulch to conserve moisture. Removing spent flower stalks can improve appearance but is optional. Trim damaged leaves as needed; the species generally needs no routine pruning.
