About Asian Moon Butterfly Bush

Asian Moon is a sterile butterfly bush selection grown for purple flower spikes and visits from pollinating insects. It is a sizeable shrub for a sunny position, though mature dimensions and flowering dates vary with climate and growing conditions. ## Flowers and form The [University of Arkansas Extension](https://www.uaex.uada.edu/yard-garden/resource-library/plant-database/shrubs/butterfly-bush.aspx) reports that the university introduced ‘Asian Moon’ as a sterile selection in 2006. The [Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder](https://plantfinder.mobot.org/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?isprofile=0&letter=b&taxonid=274451) identifies it as a cross between Buddleja davidii var. nanhoensis ‘Moonshadow’ and B. asiatica and describes purple flowers. Sterility reduces viable seed but does not establish that the plant is appropriate in every region. ## Siting Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Butterfly bushes generally tolerate dry conditions after establishment; water new plants regularly while roots develop. The genus includes shrubs with varied mature sizes and hardiness, so use local climate and available space to guide placement. ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the shrub and encourage flowering on new growth. Remove spent flower spikes if desired. Confirm local recommendations for butterfly bush before planting.
