HUMDINGER® ‘Gold Drop’ is a compact butterfly bush selected for dense golden foliage and purple flower panicles. Walters Gardens describes it as a more compact, floriferous improvement over ‘Little Nugget’; its profile lists a typical height of 2.5–3 feet and spread of 3.5–4 feet, with hardiness in USDA zones 5–10. ## Flowers and Foliage
Purple panicles rise above yellow-gold leaves, creating the cultivar’s principal color contrast. The breeder places flowering in late summer and early fall and describes the HUMDINGER® collection as beginning in midsummer, earlier than MONARCH® butterfly bushes. The foliage may read more yellow or gold under different light and through the season.
## Garden Use
Use this compact shrub in a sunny border or as a focal accent where its foliage can contrast with green-leaved plants. Walters Gardens lists butterflies, hummingbirds and bees among the visitors it attracts, and identifies fragrant flowers. The breeder’s profile gives zones 5–10; local performance and mature dimensions vary with climate and care.
## Siting
Choose full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Walters Gardens lists low-to-average water needs and notes moderate drought tolerance after establishment.
## Maintenance
In cold regions the stems may die back in winter. Walters Gardens recommends cutting old wood back hard in spring because butterfly bushes flower on new growth; avoid fall pruning where plants may still be actively growing. Water during establishment, then adjust irrigation to soil and climate.
