Create design onlineAbout HUMDINGER® Orchid Annie Butterfly Bush
HUMDINGER® ‘Orchid Annie’ is a compact, rounded butterfly bush with orchid-purple panicles above green foliage. Walters Gardens describes flower clusters about 8 inches long and says the first flush begins a few weeks earlier than expected for butterfly bush, followed by shorter secondary panicles into early fall. Its profile lists a typical height of 2.5–3 feet and spread of 3.5–4 feet, with zones 5–10. [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=BUDOA)
## Flowers and Foliage
The cultivar’s orchid-purple panicles stand above a refined, rounded shrub. The breeder places the strongest display in the initial bloom and reports continued flowering on shorter panicles into early fall. Exact bloom timing and flower color can shift with climate and growing conditions.
## Garden Use
Use it in a sunny border or as a compact flowering accent. Walters Gardens lists butterflies, hummingbirds and bees as visitors, and identifies fragrant flowers. The breeder’s profile also lists the plant as drought tolerant once established; this does not remove the need for establishment watering.
## Siting
Walters Gardens recommends full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. It lists low-to-average water needs and hardiness zones 5–10. Height and spread are breeder estimates, so allow room for local growth and pruning style.
## Maintenance
Butterfly bushes flower on new wood. Walters Gardens recommends cutting old stems back hard in spring, especially where winter injury occurs, and cautions against late-season pruning before dormancy. Water regularly while roots establish, then adjust irrigation to rainfall and drainage.
