Create design onlineAbout HUMDINGER® Magenta Munchkin Butterfly Bush
HUMDINGER® ‘Magenta Munchkin’ is a low, rounded butterfly bush with medium-green foliage and abundant fuchsia-red flower panicles. Walters Gardens describes individual blooms with lighter centers and lists the mature plant at 2.5–3 feet tall by about 4 feet wide, in USDA zones 5–10. The breeder places the cultivar among the earlier-blooming HUMDINGER® selections. [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=BUDMM)
## Flowers and Foliage
The flowers form 7–8 inch panicles, with lighter eyes in the individual fuchsia-red florets. Walters Gardens lists flowering in late summer and early fall, with long bloom, against medium-green foliage. Flower shade and bloom timing vary with local conditions.
## Garden Use
Its rounded, compact form fits a sunny border or focal planting. The breeder lists butterflies, hummingbirds and bees among its visitors and describes the flowers as fragrant. The 4-foot spread estimate is a useful guide for spacing, but climate and pruning influence the final outline.
## Siting
Plant in full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Walters Gardens lists low-to-average water needs and moderate drought tolerance after establishment.
## Maintenance
Water through the first growing season, then adjust frequency as roots establish and site conditions dictate. Butterfly bush flowers on new growth; Walters Gardens advises a hard spring cutback of old wood and discourages pruning in fall before dormancy, particularly in regions with cold winters.
