About Green Velvet Boxwood Shrub

Green Velvet is a rounded, mounded evergreen boxwood with small green leaves that hold their color through winter. Virginia Tech reports about 2 feet tall by 2.5 feet wide after 15 years, while Saunders Brothers lists about 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide. Its shape suits low hedges, borders, and foundation plantings. ## Form and placement This hybrid descends from Korean and common boxwood parents. Its naturally rounded form can be kept clipped or allowed to develop into a soft mound. Grow it in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil; avoid sites that remain waterlogged. ## Seasonal foliage and health The glossy green foliage provides year-round structure. Saunders Brothers lists the cultivar for hedging and edging and describes it as deer resistant. NewGen reports extreme susceptibility to boxwood leafminer and moderate susceptibility to boxwood blight, particularly in warmer regions. Leave room for air circulation and monitor for leaf stippling, thinning, or dieback. ## Maintenance Water while establishing and during extended dry spells. Saunders Brothers recommends light pruning in late winter or early spring; avoid repeated shearing that leaves a dense outer shell. Mulch over the root zone without piling mulch against the stems.
