About Japanese Boxwood

Japanese Boxwood is listed under the broader species name Buxus microphylla, a slow-growing evergreen shrub with compact rounded growth. Virginia Tech gives the species a general hardiness range of zones 5–9 and notes that Japanese boxwood forms vary from low shrubs to upright small trees. Size and habit therefore depend on the variety. ## Form and landscape use Littleleaf boxwood can provide year-round green structure in edging, foundation beds, formal hedges, and clipped plantings. Allow room for the selected plant’s mature form, since varieties differ in height and spread and may need pruning to remain neat. ## Siting For Buxus microphylla var. japonica, North Carolina State Extension recommends a cool, moist root zone and well-drained soil, with dappled to partial shade; full sun may bronze foliage and deep shade can produce sparse growth. These light and size details apply to that named variety and may not fit every plant sold under the broader species name. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and mulch to moderate root-zone temperatures. Keep soil well drained, and prune only as needed to maintain the chosen size and shape. North Carolina State Extension also lists leafminer, mites, blight, leaf spot, and root problems among possible concerns.
