Create design onlineAbout Green Gem Korean Boxwood
Green Gem is a dense, rounded evergreen boxwood hybrid developed from Korean boxwood and common boxwood. Its glossy dark-green leaves hold their color well in winter, and its compact 2–3 foot form suits low hedges, narrow paths and patio edges.
## Identity and form
North Carolina Extension identifies Green Gem as a hybrid of *Buxus microphylla* ‘Koreana’ and *B. sempervirens*. Its plant toolbox lists a dense, globular habit, slow growth and a mature size of 2–3 feet high and wide. This hybrid combines Korean boxwood parentage with *Buxus sempervirens*, an important distinction when choosing a compact, winter-hardy boxwood.
## Siting
Grow it in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. The [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/buxus-green-gem/common-name/green-gem-boxwood/) lists USDA zones 5–9 and notes that winter winds can dehydrate foliage and cause bronzing. Mulch around the shallow roots and avoid prolonged waterlogging.
## Maintenance
Green Gem needs little routine pruning, though its small leaves tolerate shearing when a formal outline is desired. Wait until after the last spring frost before pruning to reduce injury to tender growth. Watch for boxwood blight, leafminer, psyllid and mites; poorly drained soil can lead to root rot. Keep snow from accumulating heavily on branches and avoid disturbing the shallow root system.
