About Winter Beauty Boxwood

Winter Beauty is a Korean boxwood selection with a mounded outline, dark-green evergreen foliage and attractive bronze winter color. It brings year-round structure to a border or foundation planting while requiring little pruning to maintain its natural form. ## Cultivar identity and seasonal color The [University of Connecticut Plant Database](https://plantdatabase.uconn.edu/detail.php?pid=74) identifies ‘Winter Beauty’ as a *Buxus microphylla* var. *koreana* selection. It describes a mounded form with dark-green foliage that bronzes attractively in winter and says little pruning is needed. Cornell’s woody plant database likewise lists ‘Winter Beauty’ as a mounded, dark-green Korean-variety selection with winter bronzing. ## Siting Plant in sun or light shade in cool, moist soil that drains well. Boxwood has shallow roots, so mulch to conserve moisture and protect them from heat. Shelter foliage from drying winter winds and strong winter sun. Hardiness can vary among boxwood cultivars; choose a sheltered position in colder sites and confirm the plant’s local winter performance. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry periods, but avoid waterlogged roots. Shape lightly if needed and avoid shearing into old, leafless wood. Inspect foliage for winter desiccation and monitor for mites, leafminer, scale, leaf spot and root rot. Remove damaged or dead branches after the worst cold has passed.
