Winter Gem is a compact, evergreen littleleaf boxwood with dense green foliage that can be clipped into a small hedge or formal shape. This cultivar is often classified as Buxus microphylla var. japonica ‘Winter Gem’; its dense habit also suits foundation beds and containers.
## Form and placement
The [Monrovia cultivar profile](https://www.monrovia.com/winter-gem-boxwood.html) describes a rounded plant with rich green leaves, commonly used for small hedges, borders, containers, and topiary. It lists a mature size of 4–6 feet in both height and width, while the [Clemson Extension boxwood guide](https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/boxwood/) describes Winter Gem at about 4 feet tall and wide. These are landscape estimates, and pruning can maintain a smaller outline.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun or partial sun with well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment, then water when the upper soil begins to dry; avoid waterlogged roots. Mulch helps conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. The Monrovia profile lists USDA zones 5–9.
## Seasonal interest
The evergreen foliage gives structure throughout the year. In colder sites, leaves may take on a bronze cast before returning to green in spring.
## Maintenance
Prune as needed to maintain a hedge or chosen shape. Make sure the site drains well and protect exposed foliage from drying winter wind.
