Buxus sempervirens ‘Aureovariegata’ is a gold-edged common boxwood with evergreen leaves streaked and splashed with creamy yellow. Its dense, bushy growth provides year-round structure, while the variegated foliage brings contrast to shaded borders and formal plantings.
## Foliage and placement
The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/87524/buxus-sempervirens-aureovariegata-v/details) accepts the name ‘Aureovariegata’ and describes small green leaves marked with creamy yellow. It lists the plant for architectural, courtyard, patio, garden edging, and hedge uses. North Carolina Extension also recognizes ‘Aureovariegata’ among common boxwood cultivars. Allow room for a large shrub if it is not regularly pruned; the RHS profile gives a mature range of roughly 2.5–4 metres.
## Growing conditions
The RHS recommends full or partial shade, fertile well-drained soil, and regular watering while the plant establishes. Common boxwood has shallow roots, so mulch can help conserve moisture and keep roots cool.
## Seasonal interest
The foliage remains evergreen and supplies color through the year. Small yellow-green flowers appear in spring but are not the main ornamental feature.
## Maintenance
Prune as needed to maintain the desired outline, and water regularly during establishment. Keep the root zone well-drained and avoid exposing variegated foliage to drying conditions.
