Mexican bird of paradise is a rounded, fine-textured evergreen shrub or small tree with fern-like green foliage and clusters of bright yellow flowers. In warm climates it can flower over an extended season and brings a light, airy form to sunny landscapes.
## Identity and placement
The [Kew Plants of the World Online profile](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:60473357-2/general-information) accepts Erythrostemon mexicanus and lists Caesalpinia mexicana as a synonym. The [University of Florida IFAS profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP082) uses the accepted name and describes an evergreen shrub or small tree, with flowers from spring through fall and hardiness zones 9A–11B. The [University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://apps.cals.arizona.edu/arboretum/taxon.aspx?id=43) describes a 10–15 foot plant, full sun, well-drained soil, and low rainfall adaptation. Its flowers draw hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
## Maintenance
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, water deeply but infrequently; more frequent watering can increase flowering. Protect roots in freezing weather and wait until after the last frost to remove cold damage. Seed pods can litter nearby paving.
