About Baja Fairy Duster

Baja fairy duster is an evergreen, open shrub with fern-like leaves and vivid red, brush-shaped flowers. Native to Baja California, it adds fine texture and a long seasonal display to warm gardens, and its flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies ([University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://apps.cals.arizona.edu/arboretum/taxon.aspx?id=980); [University of Arizona Desert Legume Program](https://cales.arizona.edu/desertlegumeprogram/legume-taxa/calliandra-californica.html)). ## Flowers and landscape use Flowering responds to winter temperatures and moisture: in warm conditions with adequate water, blooms can continue for much of the year, while a freeze can delay the main display until spring and fall. The shrub works as an accent or specimen in a sunny, well-drained site. [Botanic Gardens South Australia](https://plantselector.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au/Plants/Details/102) reports a mature height of 1.2–1.8 m and spread of 1.4–1.5 m, close to this plant’s existing size estimate. ## Siting and water Established plants tolerate drought, but regular irrigation during hot weather helps maintain appearance and flowering. Provide full sun and good drainage, and leave room for the open, arching branches. ## Maintenance Routine shaping is usually unnecessary. Prune selectively to control size or encourage a denser outline, and cut back stems damaged by freezing. Avoid shearing if you want to preserve the shrub’s natural form.
