American beautyberry is a native, arching deciduous shrub grown for the vivid purple fruit that circles its stems in fall. Small flowers appear along new growth in late spring and early summer, followed by berries that feed songbirds and small mammals and may remain into early winter.
## Form and placement
The [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/callicarpa-americana/) describes a shrub about 3–8 ft tall and 3–6 ft wide, with green leaves and open, arching stems. It suits naturalized areas, woodland edges, pond margins, mass plantings, and informal screens where there is room for its broad habit. Several plants of the same type nearby may improve fruit set. The berries, rather than the flowers, provide the strongest seasonal display.
## Growing conditions
Grow in full sun to part shade; deep shade reduces performance. The species tolerates varied soils if drainage is good. Its flowers and fruit develop on new shoots, so pruning can be used to manage size without removing the next season's flower buds.
## Maintenance
In late winter, cut back old stems if a smaller, renewed shrub is desired; the extension source suggests a hard cut to about 1 ft. Less severe thinning can preserve a larger natural shape. Avoid pruning after new growth begins, and leave some berries for wildlife if they remain on the branches.
