About Superba Bellflower

‘Superba’ is a vigorous clustered bellflower with upright stems topped by dense clusters of deep violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers in summer. It forms a spreading clump and works well in sunny or partly shaded borders, cottage gardens, and cut-flower plantings where its gradual rhizomatous spread can be managed. ## Flowers and form The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/94502/campanula-glomerata-superba/details) describes a strong-growing rhizomatous perennial with flower stems to 60 cm and dense deep violet-purple blooms. [North Carolina Extension’s species profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/campanula-glomerata/) lists ‘Superba’ at 2–3 feet tall with dense rich violet-blue clusters. The live 2–3-foot height remains supported by the cultivar-specific extension entry. The RHS reports a mature spread range of 0.5–1 m, and the North Carolina profile describes clustered bellflowers as clumping and spreading. ## Siting Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The RHS recommends neutral to alkaline conditions and lists chalk or loam. Avoid constantly wet ground: even moisture is useful, but good drainage helps limit rot. Use as a flowering border plant or for cut stems, allowing room for the clump to widen. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and dry spells. Cut back flowered stems after bloom if a tidier appearance or possible second flush is desired. Divide in spring or autumn when the clump becomes crowded, and monitor its rhizomes near neighboring plants. Watch for slugs, snails, and aphids.
