About Dalmatian Bellflower Plant

Dalmatian bellflower (*Campanula portenschlagiana*) forms a low, evergreen mound with small, broadly heart-shaped green leaves and violet-blue, tubular flowers in summer. Its compact growth suits rock gardens, wall crevices, path edges, containers and other well-drained planting spots. ## Seasonal interest and use The Royal Horticultural Society’s profile describes branching stems with violet-blue flowers in summer and a mature mound around 15 cm tall. Kew accepts *C. portenschlagiana* as a species native to Croatia and Hercegovina. ## Siting and soil Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Rock gardens, gravelly borders and crevices suit its low mound; the plant can also edge paths or containers. The RHS notes it can scramble up a wall and seed into cracks where conditions are favorable, so leave space for its spread and avoid crowding smaller neighbors. Keep the crown out of standing water, especially in winter. The RHS says routine pruning is not required; remove spent flowers and stems to tidy the mound. Watch for slugs and snails, which the RHS lists as possible pests.
