About Balboa Sunset Trumpet Vine

Balboa Sunset is Monrovia’s selection of trumpet vine, botanically identified as Campsis radicans ‘Monbal’. This vigorous deciduous climber produces red to deep-orange trumpet flowers over a long season and can grow to 30 feet or more, so it needs a strong support and room for regular containment ([sources: [Monrovia cultivar profile](https://www.monrovia.com/balboa-sunset-trumpet-vine.html), [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/campsis-radicans/common-name/trumpet-vine/)]). ## Flowers and growth Monrovia reports flowering from late spring into fall and lists the plant for USDA zones 4–11. The flowers are a strong warm accent against green foliage and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. Clinging stems attach by aerial rootlets; use a sound wall, fence, or heavy trellis rather than a light garden support. The current catalog height of 9 m and label of 30 feet or more are consistent with the supplier’s description. ## Siting Choose full sun for best flowering. The vine is vigorous and may spread by root shoots, as trumpet vines commonly do, so site it where both overhead growth and the root zone can be controlled. Allow access for pruning, especially near gutters, roofs, and openings. ## Maintenance Water regularly while establishing, then adjust irrigation to local conditions. In late winter or early spring, cut back selected stems to control size and encourage flowering on new growth. Remove unwanted root suckers and tie young stems to the support if needed.
