About Minnesota Red Trumpet Vine

[Minnesota Red](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/trumpet-vine) is a vigorous, deciduous trumpet vine selected for deep red, trumpet-shaped flowers. The climbing stems attach to supports and can cover a tall fence, arbor, or trellis. Hummingbirds and butterflies visit the flowers. ## Form and flowering Illinois Extension lists this cultivar at about 30 feet tall, while SiteOne gives maximum height and spread up to 30 feet. The vine flowers in summer, with red blooms against green foliage. It is suited to large spaces where its vigorous growth and runners can be controlled. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade and provide a strong support. Keep soil moderately moist, especially while the plant establishes. SiteOne lists hardiness in USDA zones 4–9. Trumpet vines may sucker and spread beyond the original planting, so allow room for maintenance access. ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to control height and remove unwanted stems. Flowers develop on new growth. Dig out suckers as they appear and keep the vine away from structures that cannot support its mature weight.
