Ylang Ylang Tree

[Ylang-ylang](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/7/2779) is a tropical tree known for its fragrant, long-petaled flowers, which are harvested for perfume oil. The blooms emerge green and mature to yellow or yellow-brown. Long, drooping branches form an irregular crown. ## Form and flowering Singapore’s National Parks Board gives a typical height range of 10–20 metres and describes pendulous branchlets with green foliage. In humid tropical climates the tree can become very large, while botanical gardens also grow it under glass or in containers. Its flowers are especially valued for their intense fragrance. ## Growing conditions Provide full sun or partial shade, warm temperatures, high humidity, and moist but well-drained soil. Kew records the species in wet tropical biomes; Chicago Botanic Garden lists USDA zones 9–11 and notes container culture in protected conditions. In cooler climates, grow it in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. ## Maintenance Water moderately and keep the root zone from drying completely. Remove dead or crossing branches and train young growth to maintain a balanced form. Container plants may need pruning to fit their indoor space; protect them from cold drafts and low humidity.
