Canna ‘Australia’ is a bold, upright canna lily with deep burgundy-black foliage and flame-red flowers. Its dark leaves make a strong backdrop for summer-to-fall blooms in a sunny, warm garden or large container.
## Cultivar and size
The [Chicago Botanic Garden Plant Finder](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/canna-x-generalis-australia-australia-canna-lily) identifies Canna × generalis ‘Australia’, describes dark burgundy-black leaves and flame-red flowers, and reports about 5 feet tall. The [Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder](https://plantfinder.mobot.org/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?basic=canna&isprofile=1&taxonid=254890) gives a mature height of 4–5 feet and identifies ‘Australia’ as a purple-leaved cultivar.
## Siting
Choose a sunny position with rich, consistently moist soil. The Chicago Botanic Garden lists zones 7–11; cannas need warmth and are not reliably hardy in colder winters.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flower stalks to encourage further bloom. Where winter freezes threaten, lift rhizomes after frost and store them cool and dry, then replant after frost danger has passed.
