About Indian shot

Canna indica is a rhizomatous perennial native to tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas. North Carolina Extension describes its broad leaves, red through yellow-orange flowers, and summer-to-fall bloom; Kew recognizes it as a distinct species. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/canna-indica/) and [Kew Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:319130-2) provide species-level references. ## Garden Use Use Indian shot where its large foliage and seasonal flower spikes can be seen, such as a sunny border or a substantial container. Flower color varies across the species, so the botanical name alone does not identify a particular color form. ## Siting and Soil NC State lists full sun to part shade, moist, well-drained soil, and USDA zones 8a through 11b. Its height range of 1 foot 6 inches to 8 feet 2 inches converts to about 1.5–8.2 feet; its 1 foot 6 inch to 3 foot width converts to 18–36 inches. Keep the root zone moist during active growth and allow room for the broad leaves. ## Maintenance Cannas are rhizomatous and tender in cold winters. In frost-prone gardens, protect or lift the rhizomes and follow regional [RHS Canna growing guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/canna/growing-guide).
