About Primero Red Pepper

Primero Red is a University of Wisconsin collaboration and a habanero selection with large green-to-red fruit and milder heat than a typical habanero. [PanAmerican Seed](https://www.panamseed.com/Products/048300001037197/pepper-primero-red/) reports 18–24 inches tall and wide, late spring and summer flowering, and harvest about 60–65 days for green fruit or 75–80 days for ripe fruit. ## Landscape Use Use it in a sunny edible garden or roomy patio container. PanAmerican Seed describes a large, vigorous, mounded plant and recommends container or in-ground growing; fruit suits fresh salsa, drying, and cooking. ## Seasonal Interest The breeder lists late spring and summer flowering. Harvest timing varies with warmth and growing conditions. ## Siting and Care Peppers grow in full sun and deeply worked, well-drained soil with organic matter. Keep the root zone consistently moist without leaving it waterlogged. [University of Connecticut Extension](https://homegarden.cahnr.uconn.edu/factsheets/peppers/) recommends warm soil before transplanting and regular watering. ## Maintenance Pick fruit at the desired color and size. Support vigorous plants with heavy crops; remove spent plants after frost where peppers are annuals.
