Appalachian sedge is a low, fine-textured North American sedge that forms small clumps of narrow, arching leaves. It is especially useful beneath trees, along woodland paths, or as a low groundcover in dry shade, where its soft foliage can knit together a planting without the broad spread of many lawn grasses.
## Size and siting
The University of Tennessee’s [Tennessee Smart Yards profile](https://tnyards.utk.edu/carex-appalachica/) describes a clump-forming plant about 6–8 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, suited to part or full shade and medium to dry soils; it cautions that the plant does not tolerate wet soil. New England’s [Native Plant Trust profile](https://plantfinder.nativeplanttrust.org/plant/Carex-appalachica) describes tight clumps generally under 8 inches tall, a 10–14-inch spread, and zones 4–8. Published height ranges differ: Tennessee Smart Yards gives 6–8 inches, Native Plant Trust 8–10 inches, and New Moon Nursery 6–12 inches. The current 0.4 m height exceeds these exact-species accounts, so its numeric value is cleared; the published 6–12-inch range is retained. The 0.5 m width is preserved because 18 inches rounds to 0.5 m at one decimal.
## Garden use
Use it for dry shade, woodland gardens, or grouped groundcover plantings. Its foliage is the main ornamental feature; flowers are inconspicuous.
## Maintenance
Allow room for clumps to widen gradually and keep competing weeds down while plants establish. Avoid persistently wet sites and prolonged drought; trim only damaged foliage as needed.
