ColorGrass® Carex Red Rooster is a compact ornamental sedge selected for upright, red-bronze foliage with curled tips. It brings fine texture and warm color to containers and sunny or partly shaded garden beds, while its modest footprint suits repeated plantings along an edge or in a mixed border.
## Foliage and size
PanAmerican Seed’s [breeder profile](https://www.panamseed.com/products/013606635015259/colorgrass-carex-red-rooster/) lists 20–30 inches tall and 12 inches wide, with summer and late-summer flowering. It describes an upright habit and red color group. North Carolina State Extension’s [Carex buchananii profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/carex-buchananii/) provides species-level growing guidance and broader dimensions; the breeder’s 12-inch width is used for this named product. The existing 0.7 m height and 0.4 m width are reasonable approximations within these published figures.
## Siting
Grow in sun or partial sun with moist, well-drained soil. PanAmerican lists USDA zones 6a–9b; its cultural guide cautions that excess fertilizer can make plants less upright.
## Maintenance
Remove damaged foliage when needed and keep the root zone from drying out for long periods. Use a light seasonal tidy-up to show fresh growth without shearing into old foliage.
