About Ice Dance Sedge Grass

‘Ice Dance’ Japanese sedge is a compact evergreen Carex with glossy green leaves edged in white and a slow-spreading habit. Its tidy foliage makes it useful as a low groundcover in shaded borders, while small spring flower spikes remain secondary to the leaf display. ## Landscape use Use this cultivar beneath trees, along a shaded path, or in a container where its bright leaf margins can be seen. The [Walters Gardens profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=CARID) describes a slow to moderate spreader suited to groundcover or containers; the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/135663/carex-morrowii-ice-dance/details) notes its tufted mound and low spreading growth. ## Size and siting Walters Gardens lists plants about 12–16 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, with hardiness zones 5–9. Grow in part shade to full shade in moist or average soil that drains well. The plant tolerates more sun when moisture is adequate, though shaded placements help preserve a cool, even growing environment. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and during prolonged dry periods. Remove dead or weathered foliage in summer, or tidy the plant in early spring before new growth fills in. In colder parts of its range, protection from drying winter winds can help the evergreen foliage persist. Divide established clumps in spring if they become congested.
