About Sedge Grass (Carex)

Carex is a large genus of grass-like flowering perennials commonly called sedges. Its members vary widely in foliage, growth habit, moisture needs, and seasonal behavior, so a genus-level listing is best used as a general introduction rather than a guide to one particular sedge. ## Form and seasonal interest Sedges may grow in clumps or spread by rhizomes, and their leaves range from green and blue-gray to bronze and variegated. Many are grown mainly for foliage; their small flowers are often brown and appear in summer or autumn. Individual species may be evergreen or deciduous and can differ greatly in mature size. ## Siting The [Royal Horticultural Society’s Carex guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/carex?type=0) notes that many types prefer reliably moist soil in sun or light shade, while some need wetter ground and others prefer different soil conditions. Choose a species-specific selection for a defined site and check its mature dimensions before planting. ## Maintenance Care depends on the species and whether its foliage persists through winter. Remove damaged leaves as needed, and follow the selected species’ guidance for any seasonal trimming or division.
