Create design onlineAbout Prairie Fire Sedge
‘Prairie Fire’ is an ornamental New Zealand sedge grown for narrow green-bronze leaves tipped in orange. In full sun the warm color becomes stronger, and established clumps can keep orange and red tones into cooler parts of the year. The upright, arching foliage makes a bright accent in a border or container.
## Foliage and form
The exact [Hoffman Nursery profile](https://hoffmannursery.com/plants/details/carex-testacea-prairie-fire) identifies ‘Prairie Fire’ as a seed selection of Carex testacea and describes slender green-bronze foliage with orange highlights, stronger orange color in full sun, and a 2-foot height. [Boething Treeland Farms](https://www.boethingtreeland.com/plants/carex-testacea/) confirms the cultivar, clumping and arching form, 18–24-inch mature height and spread, and orange-red foliage in fall and winter.
## Siting
Plant in full sun for the most vivid color; partial shade is tolerated. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and can adapt to drier conditions once established. The current 0.5 m height and width and 1–2-foot labels are retained because they fall within the nursery ranges. Published hardiness guidance is not identical: Hoffman gives zones 6–9, while Boething lists 6–10.
## Maintenance
Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes and reduce watering only after it has settled in. Avoid waterlogged winter soil. If the foliage needs cutting back, do so early in the growing season to allow fresh leaves time to mature.
