About Pyramidal Hornbeam

‘Fastigiata’ is a selection of European hornbeam with closely ascending branches and an upright crown when young. As it matures, the crown broadens and may become wider than tall; the Morton Arboretum lists a typical mature range of 30–40 ft tall by 20–30 ft wide ([profile](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/european-hornbeam/)). ## Growing Conditions The Royal Horticultural Society describes bright green, ribbed leaves that turn yellow in autumn and recommends full sun or partial shade. It lists chalk, clay, loam and sand among suitable soils ([RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/96627/carpinus-betulus-fastigiata)). ## Maintenance Some pruning can create a clear trunk or maintain a desired shape, but the crown needs space to develop naturally. Virginia Cooperative Extension cautions that ‘Fastigiata’ becomes quite wide at maturity ([Virginia Cooperative Extension](https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/content/pubs_ext_vt_edu/en/3010/3010-1480/3010-1480.html)).
