About Variegated Hornbeam

*Carpinus betulus* 'Foliis Argenteovariegatis Pendula' is a Polish hornbeam selection with leaves irregularly mottled in white and a broad crown whose branch tips hang gently. Its name suggests a stronger weeping form than sources describe; mature-height estimates range from 5 to 10 metres. ## Form and siting The [Szmit Nursery profile](https://uww.szmit.pl/en/polish-historical-varieties-of-decorative-trees/320-carpinus-betulus-foliis-argenteovariegatis-pendula-en) describes a wide, slightly pendant crown and reports a height of 6–8 m. The [Polish Nurserymen Association catalog](https://e-katalogroslin.pl/plants/1209,grab-pospolity-foliis-argenteovariegatis-pendula_carpinus-betulus-foliis-argenteovariegatis-pendula) gives a 5–10 m height range and recommends sun or partial shade. Allow room for a spreading tree several metres wide; young leaves show the strongest white mottling, and the foliage turns yellow in autumn. ## Maintenance Regular selective pruning encourages fresh, brightly mottled shoots. The Polish catalog recommends supporting the leader during establishment if a more upright framework is wanted. This selection was recorded in Poland before 1905, and [Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/carpinus/carpinus-betulus/) describes its habit as only marginally weeping.
