About Lucas Hornbeam

‘Lucas’ is a narrow, columnar European hornbeam suited to a formal screen, clipped hedge, or upright accent where space is limited. Its dense branching, durable foliage, and leaves that persist into winter give it structure beyond the growing season. ## Form and seasonal interest The [J. Frank Schmidt profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/trees/lucas-columnar-hornbeam/) identifies Carpinus betulus ‘Lucas’, rates it for USDA zone 5, and describes a tightly columnar habit about 30 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Thick dark green leaves turn golden yellow to brown and often remain on the tree through winter. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/271351/carpinus-betulus-lucas/details) describes a mature tree around 8 metres tall, broadening with age, and notes golden autumn foliage, retained brown leaves, and green catkins in late spring. ## Siting Grow in full sun or partial shade. The breeder reports tolerance of high-pH and heavy soils, while the RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand; provide room for the crown to broaden as it matures. ## Maintenance Water regularly during establishment, then adjust to local rainfall and soil drainage. It can be clipped as a hedge or screen, but pruning is optional where its natural columnar form is preferred.
