Create design onlineAbout Palisade American Hornbeam
Palisade® is a dense, upright oval American hornbeam selected for a uniform canopy and yellow-orange fall color. It works well as a street tree or formal shade tree, while its sinewy gray bark adds character as the tree matures.
## Cultivar form
[Sunleaf Nursery](https://www.sunleaf.com/products/carpinuspalisade.htm) identifies the selection as Carpinus caroliniana ‘CCSQU’ and reports a narrow upright oval canopy, green foliage, yellow-orange autumn color, and typical dimensions of 30 feet by 15 feet. The [University of Minnesota UFOR profile](https://trees.umn.edu/blue-beech-carpinus-caroliniana) lists the same cultivar as an upright oval form with yellow-orange fall color and a broader range of 20–30 feet tall by 15–20 feet wide. These figures describe normal variation among sites and mature specimens.
## Siting
Choose a site with room for a mature tree and use it in a street planting, yard, or park setting. The species tolerates full sun, partial shade, or full shade and is associated with moist, rich soils. Water during establishment, particularly through dry weather.
## Maintenance
Allow its dense branching and upright oval crown to develop naturally. Prune only to remove damaged or crossing branches, and provide supplemental water during establishment.
