Create design onlineAbout Pawnee Pecan Tree
‘Pawnee’ is an early-ripening pecan cultivar that produces large, thin-shelled nuts and is widely used for its early harvest. It needs a compatible pollen source and benefits from careful crop management, especially where an abundant crop can overload branches or reduce kernel quality.
## Cultivar traits
The [Arbor Day Foundation profile](https://shop.arborday.org/nursery/pawnee-pecan) identifies Pawnee as a Type I pecan, gives a typical size of 20–30 feet tall by 15–25 feet wide, and recommends a Type II cultivar for pollination. [Oklahoma State University Extension](https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/pecan-varieties-for-oklahoma) lists Pawnee as an early-maturing cultivar and notes that heavy crops may need thinning; drought or crop overload can affect kernel appearance. UGA’s [home-garden guidance](https://pecanbreeding.uga.edu/home-and-garden.html) does not recommend Pawnee for low-input yard orchards because of scab susceptibility or alternate-bearing concerns.
## Siting
Plant in full sun in deep, well-drained soil with room for a mature canopy. Match the cultivar and pollination partner to local climate; pecan performance varies across its range.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and dry spells. Monitor crop load and local disease pressure, and thin fruit when needed to reduce overbearing. Plan for fallen leaves, husks, and nuts.
