About First Editions® Sapphire Surf™ Bluebeard

[Sapphire Surf™](https://firsteditionsplants.com/product/sapphire-surf-bluebeard/) is the First Editions introduction of Caryopteris × clandonensis ‘Blauer Splatz’. This compact, spreading bluebeard bears dark blue flowers in late summer and fall above dark green foliage. Its low profile works along sunny borders and as a flowering groundcover. ## Form and seasonal interest First Editions lists this selection at about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide, with dark green foliage and blue flowers. The shrub spreads into a low mound and flowers when many summer perennials are finishing. The late blooms provide a nectar source for pollinators, while the compact outline makes it useful at the front of a mixed planting. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. First Editions rates the cultivar for USDA zones 5–9 and notes drought resistance once established. Keep new plants watered as they develop roots, then adjust irrigation to rainfall and site conditions. Allow its wider spread to fill in without crowding neighboring plants. ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the shrub and encourage vigorous new flowering growth. Remove winter-damaged stems after growth resumes. Avoid poorly drained sites and leave enough space for the mature three-foot spread.
