Caryota is a genus of palms native from tropical and subtropical Asia to Vanuatu. Its twice-divided leaves have wedge-shaped, jagged-tipped leaflets that resemble fish tails, giving the group its common name. The [Kew genus profile](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:31147-1) recognizes about thirteen species, so mature form, size, flowering schedule, and climate tolerance vary by species.
## Form and siting
Some species become large trees with broad crowns. In its [description of Caryota kiriwongensis](https://palms.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/v53n4p171-172.pdf), palm taxonomist Donald Hodel reports a height of about 35 m. Match the palm to a species-level profile before allowing for mature height, crown spread, frost exposure, or irrigation, and avoid placing fruiting palms where people may handle fallen fruit.
## Growing conditions
The genus spans tropical and subtropical habitats. Use species-specific guidance for sun, soil drainage, and water. [Kew notes that Caryota fruit contains oxalic-acid crystals](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:665636-1) that can irritate skin and membranes; wear gloves when handling fruit.
## Maintenance
Remove only dead or damaged fronds when needed. Use a qualified palm-care professional when work requires climbing or powered equipment.
