About Giant Fishtail Palm

Caryota obtusa is a giant, single-trunked fishtail palm with an immense crown of broad, twice-divided fronds. It is a wet-tropical tree native to parts of South and Southeast Asia. [Kew’s Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:665622-1) treats the name as accepted, and the [San Diego Zoo’s plant guide](https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/plants/fishtail-palm) describes the scale and flowering cycle of this and related fishtail palms. ## Landscape use Plant only where the eventual trunk and canopy can be accommodated at a very large scale. It is appropriate as a specimen in tropical parks, botanical collections, or exceptionally spacious gardens, rather than a small residential setting. Reported mature sizes vary substantially, with some specimens far taller than typical landscape estimates. ## Foliage and flowers The crown carries very large bipinnate leaves with hanging leaflets. Caryota inflorescences form long, pendulous clusters. This species is monocarpic: the single trunk dies after completing its flowering cycle, which may extend over several years. The replacement process is therefore different from the clumping fishtail palm, whose unflowered stems persist. ## Siting and soil Provide a warm, humid tropical setting with room for the canopy and a well-drained root zone. Kew records the species from wet tropical regions of the eastern Himalaya, southern China, and Indo-China. ## Maintenance Keep the area below the canopy accessible for inspection and cleanup. Remove only dead leaves when safe to do so; mature palms require specialized equipment and trained arborists for work at height.
