Create design onlineAbout Jaggery Palm
Caryota urens is a solitary-stemmed fishtail palm known for its large, twice-divided leaves and its use as a source of sap for jaggery and fermented toddy. [UF/IFAS](https://assessment.ifas.ufl.edu/assessments/caryota-urens/) confirms the species, family, and common names; the [FAO Mangrove Guidebook for Southeast Asia](https://www.fao.org/4/ag132e/ag132e07.pdf) describes its form, habitat, fruits, and traditional uses.
## Landscape use
This is a tall tropical specimen suited to warm climates and large properties. Its single trunk does not form the persistent clump produced by Caryota mitis, so plan for a substantial canopy and for the plant’s eventual post-flowering decline. It is also valued in regions where its inflorescence sap is tapped.
## Foliage and flowers
The long leaves are twice divided, with wedge-shaped leaflets whose toothed edges suggest a fish tail. Flower clusters emerge progressively along the trunk; after flowering and fruiting, the palm dies. The ripe red fruit contains irritating compounds and should not be touched or eaten.
## Siting and soil
Choose a warm, humid site with adequate room and freely draining soil. Regional palm references list it among large ornamental palms, but mature size and suitability depend on local climate. Protect young plants while they establish.
## Maintenance
Remove only dead or damaged leaves. Keep fallen fruits away from walkways and handle them only with suitable protection. Allow ample time and access for safe maintenance of the mature crown.
