About Chinese Chestnut Tree

Chinese chestnut is a deciduous tree with a rounded crown, sharply toothed leaves, and edible nuts enclosed in spiny burs. It is valued both as a landscape shade tree and as a nut-producing species. [Iowa State University Extension](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/article/2019/11/what-chinese-chestnut) explains pollination and planting needs, while [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/castanea-mollissima/) describes its form, site preferences, and landscape characteristics. ## Landscape use Plant Chinese chestnut where there is room for a broad mature crown and falling burs can be managed. It can provide shade and seasonal interest, and it is also suitable for a small orchard. For a nut crop, plant more than one compatible tree to support cross-pollination. ## Foliage and flowers The deciduous leaves are oblong, sharply toothed, and green through summer, with fall color before leaf drop. Flowers are followed by spiny burs containing edible nuts; the burs can create a nuisance underfoot. ## Siting and soil Choose full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil textures, including clay and sand, but chestnuts perform poorly in heavy, poorly drained ground. ## Maintenance Water young trees through dry periods and maintain a clear area beneath the crown for harvest and cleanup. Prune to remove dead or crossing branches while preserving a sturdy framework. Planting multiple trees is important when nut production is a goal.
